Have more time or Have more money
I would prefer to have more money.
I hope that doesn’t make me sound like a superficial person but that’s the reality of the matter. Maybe I am wrong, and maybe I am naive to think this way, but I feel that more money = more time. I haven’t been burdened with too much money yet so I could be totally wrong about this!
My logic is that if you have more money to begin with, you don’t have to work as hard to provide for life’s basic needs. Since you’re not working as hard, you have the ability to go on vacations, go out to have fun with friends and family, and take care of yourself physically and emotionally too. Of course this is assuming that the person is not a workaholic that is burning the midnight candle just to keep on getting richer. What I am thinking of is a situation where there is financial stability and the person can live comfortably.
Think about the wealthy families that lived during the 1800s for example. Jane Austen and Charles Dickens had many characters in their novels that had massive estates and lavish lifestyles. Their daily occupations consisted of doing pretty much nothing. The women sat around all day, reading, gossiping and doing needlework. They had wet nurses or governesses to take care of their children, so they didn’t even have to worry about them! The men went hunting, played cards or spent their time courting a young woman from a well-to-do family.
On the other hand, the characters that were poor had to work long hours to make a living. After they finished the day’s labor, they would come back home and make a fire to cook some food. They had to feed the others, mend the clothes, tidy up the home and put the children to bed. Once everything was done, there wasn’t much time left to do anything else but sleep. The same holds true for today. Some tasks are more simplified than they used to be, but they still take time to do. If one has a routine that revolves around work, then there’s not much time or energy to do anything else. The necessity to make more money overrides our desire to take time off because we can’t afford it. Taking care of our basic needs becomes the priority and the other things fall to the side as luxuries.
Aside from not being able to enjoy life’s pleasures, our health can be sacrificed as well. If we don’t take the time to rest and heal when we are tired, it can lead to sickness. We don’t go to the doctor because it’s costly, so we ignore the symptoms that we are experiencing. That in turn can lead to serious health complications. Our mental health is affected as well. We become so stressed and worried about paying the bills and making ends meet.
So, that’s my reasoning for preferring money over time.
Would you prefer time?
