Day 2

Write something that someone told you about yourself that you never forgot.

It wasn’t a statement. It was two questions.

“What makes you happy?”

A lot of things make me happy, but I couldn’t think of a single one at the moment. I tried to explain that there are many things even though I couldn’t give an example. Apparently, my answer was not a good one.

“So you are not happy then?”

I got called away, and that conversation kept replaying in my mind like when you eat something and it leaves a bad after taste in your mouth.

In this case, it wasn’t an argument but you get the point. All my life, I have been the hamster on the left. My mind would wipe itself clean, and I would be left with no answer, no comeback, and no argument. I would think of the best stuff when I was in bed alone, frustrated with myself because I had not thought of it before. Writing gives me the chance to think over what I want to say with no time limit to worry about. I admire people that are ready with their words because they live in the moment.

Going back to the happiness debate, I finally have an answer for that. Happiness can be the smile my husband gives me after a long day of work. Happiness can be my constant shadow that follows me everywhere in the house, wagging her tail and rolling over for a belly rub. Happiness can be hearing a song that you haven’t heard in a long time. Happiness can be finding that you have more boxes of Kleenex in the closet when you thought you had run out of them. Happiness can be a cool breeze on a warm day. Happiness can be the smell of freshly washed sheets when you go to sleep.

In my opinion, joy is a state of mind. Happiness is a collection of moments that we have when we feel good. Are we always happy? No. But we can choose to be joyful. It is a decision to remain positive as we look towards the future when going through bad experiences in life. It is knowing that God is in control, and that we can trust that everything has a purpose. Joy goes hand in hand with hope.

  1. I definitely agree. Happiness is a choice you make. Every single day you have the ability to choose how your day is going to go and how you are going to react to certain situations. For example, choosing getting angry or frustrated at an upsetting event or choosing to instead let it go and take a positive route. It is difficult to make this choice at times. Some days will be more agreeable/manageable than others but as long as one tries, joy can be found anywhere and in anything!

    1. Exactly! If we keep choosing to react badly, our tendency to get upset will become stronger. On the other hand, it will become easier to stay positive if we practice every day.

  2. Yes!! Happiness is in the big things as well as the little things, we just have to learn to recognize them!
    When we enjoy a moment, a person a place or thing we are “in joy” at its presence and it has so much to do with our attitude and disposition to find pleasure in life. 🙂
